Middletown Has A New Police Chief

R. Craig Weber was sworn in as the 8th Chief to lead the Middletown Township Police Department over its 86 year history last evening before an overflow crowd at Town Hall.

Mayor Stephanie C. Murray administered the Oath of Office as Weber’s family stood beside him.

During his remarks, Weber acknowledged the support and friendship of his Deputy Chiefs and all the members of the department.  He welcomed the Chiefs of several area municipalities and law enforcement leaders from County, State and Federal law enforcement agencies.  Weber said that under his leadership there would be an increased level of cooperation with other agencies.

A graduate of Monmouth University where he earned both a bachelors in political science and masters degree in public policy, Weber also holds a masters in administrative science with certifications in law and public safety administration and human resources administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.  He  joined the Department as a Patrolman in 1993. He rose through the ranks of the Traffic Safety and Detectives Bureaus before being promoted to Deputy Chief in 2010.   As Deputy Chief he was the Commander of the Technical Services Division where he was responsible for the management of the Detective Bureau, Records and Service Bureau, Community Relations Bureau, Communications and Computer Operations.

“Chief Weber is a well-rounded officer with an outstanding service record, strong ties to the community and an impressive educational background,” said Murray. “We are confident that Middletown’s long standing record and one of the safest towns in the nation will continue for years to come with him at the helm.”

Committeeman Tony Fiore noted that Middletown is the safest town per capita in the State of New Jersey “and probably the country.”  Fiore said he was confident that those high standards would continue under Weber’s leadership.

In addition to Weber’s swearing in last night, Kevin Gardiner was promoted to Sergeant and took the Oath of Office.  A Veteran of the United State Marine Corp, Gardiner holds and bachelors degree from Towson University and a masters from Kean University.  He joined the Department in 2001 and has held assignments in the Patrol Division and Detective Bureau.  He has worked as a SWAT operator and worked undercover for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Thomas Foster of Hampton, NJ was sworn in as an Officer.  As U.S. Army Veteran, Foster served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007 to 2008.  After his honorable discharge in 2012, Foster attended and graduated from the Mercer County Police Academy.  Prior to being hired by the Middletown Police Department, Foster worked for the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office.
