Any trustee applicant should be asked the question: Should Brookdale have a building named in honor of an criminal, specifically Harry Larrison?

This should not happen at a public institution where youth are forming their values and preparing to become future leaders.

Why havent the current trustees and freeholders corrected this?

    Steve,

    What was Larrison convicted of?

  3. Steve said at 11:01 am on July 11th, 2014:

There is no question that Larrison abused his public position. For instance he used a high level and highly paid County bridge inspector as his person driver. That person was also his “bag man” for cash donations.

Larrison handed our County construction projects to his “friends and family”

He died before being brought to trial, but the evidence is clear to even the blind, that Larrison misused his office. One of his charges is below…

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA : CRIMINAL COMPLAINT
    v. :
HARRY LARRISON, JR. : Magistrate No. 05-8080 (MCA)
Between in or about 2001 and in or about 2003, in Monmouth
County, in the District of New Jersey, and elsewhere, defendant
    HARRY LARRISON, JR.
did knowingly, willfully and corruptly accept and agree to accept
$5,000 and more in cash from the Developers intending to be
influenced and rewarded in connection with a business,
transaction and series of transactions of the County of Monmouth
involving a thing of value of $5,000 and more.
In violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections
    666(a)(1)(B) and 2.

The guy screwed up, yes. But he did a HELL of a lot of good for that college. I suggest it wouldn’t be what it is without him.

for some who never knew the man to sign on to that overly hackneyed, trite, jealous and plain wrong APP and Dem attack. JG is correct: there simply would not even BE a Brookdale were it not for Dir. Larrison, period. Getting that lovely farmland for the county, building it, continually improving it to become the premier community college of this state was no accident. As for the man, not one of us is a perfect human being- but, there are many reasons he was so popular and successful for so long: you could not find a more generous and compassionate person to run a county. In business, he extended credit to families who could not pay, to keep their families warm with his coal and oil. He employed people and kept them off the unemployment lines. He was always planning more improvements and county services- thinking of the ” little guys and gals coming years down the road.” At the end of his life, suffering from cancer and undergoing severe treatments, he still came into the office, ran the business, listened to all the problems, settled disputes, and made good decisions for the county: that he was betrayed by the most trusted in his life at the end,was a travesty- something his daughters and grandsons did not deserve-an amazingly strong person physically and mentally,we also watched him endure the sad cancer deaths of his youngest daughter and wife, yet manage to keep it all together- and still get more done than most politicians ever will-where else in NJ do you get the quality of our college, the parks, the libraries, ferry and marina- and many other unique services- each of which the man played a large part in creating-and, by the way, were it not for his vision, you’d be paying a lot more money every month to dispose of your garbage- because he thought handling our own here would be cheaper- it is, by far! I hope the self- righteous, p.c., and mean among us,who never knew the man, never succeed in removing his name from one of the places he was a driving force behind- and today, we can also thank his two lovely grandsons, his heart and greatest joys, for serving our country now, as well!

Harry Larrison was a crook. He misused his public office for his personal gain and the gain of his family and friends. This is offical misconduct.
He accomplished some good things, but so did most politicians that were also guilty of official misconduct. Richard Nixon was very successful in that regard.
To say there would be no county community college without him is crazy. There is one in almost every county.
I have heard from the horses mouth, how Larrison would rig public building contracts for his friends and family. It is just wrong and a misuse of his public position. Taking bribes is wrong. Using a county employee as a personal driver is misconduct.
Jack the ripper had a family that loved him. That doesn’t make him an honorable man, and neither is Larrison.
He should not be honored witha building bearing his name in the presence of students developing their personal moral standards.
The Trustees and the Freeholders have an obligation to fix that.
