Want to make a difference in your community? Shop local! Keep the money within our own community.  It’s a proven fact that independent and locally-owned businesses recirculate more revenue locally compared to absentee-owned businesses. In other words, going local creates more local wealth and jobs. The spending done by a business locally to operate, including inventory, utilities, equipment and pay to employees directly impacts the economy within its community. In addition, the indirect impact happens as dollars the local business spent at other area businesses re-circulate and the additional consumer spending that happens as employees, business owners and others spend their income in the local economy.

Not convinced? How about helping the environment? In addition to the economic impact, there is also a positive impact on the environment that occurs when shopping locally. When you choose to buy from local or independent makers, you are cutting down on processing, packaging and transportation waste.

Our 4^th annual Made in Monmouth event was recently held to help support local business as well.  Made in Monmouth was created by the Grow Monmouth Team within the County’s Division of Economic Development in 2012,  to help small Monmouth County businesses expand their customer base and find new partnerships. In addition to the annual event held at Monmouth University, Made in Monmouth expanded last year and was a part of the Monmouth County Fair in July and held two “Mini Made in Monmouth” events in Manalapan and Cream Ridge last December.

Guadagno Cleared Of Hoboken Mayor’s Charges

Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno has been cleared by U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in the allegations against her made by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, according to a report at NJ.com.

After months of praising the Christie Administration after Superstorm Sandy, Zimmer used the media frenzy when the Bridgegate story broke in January of 2014 to become famous by alleging that Guadagno shook her down seven months earlier.

The mayor said that Guadagno told her, on behalf of Governor Christie, that Hoboken’s Sandy recovery aide was tied to Zimmer pushing through a development application for the Rockefeller Group.  The shakedown allegedly happened at a supermarket ribbon cutting ceremony in May of 2013.  Zimmer suddenly remembered the shakedown in January of 2014 when the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal was dominating the news.

Ocean Township Police Seek Help In Located Missing 17 Year Old Girl

The Ocean Township Police Department is seeking public support in locating Ariel Warren, 17.

Warren has been missing since April 8.  She is know to frequent Asbury Park and Neptune Township.

Anyone with information about Warren’s whereabouts is urged to call the police.

Oceanic Bridge will close for repairs between May 26 and June 12

The work being done on the Oceanic Bridge between Middletown and Rumson this month has revealed the need for additional significant repairs. After meeting with local officials, business and educational leaders last week, Monmouth County officials determined that the best course of action would be to close the bridge around the clock for three weeks immediately following the Memorial Day weekend.

The Oceanic Bridge will be closed to all but marine traffic from Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, June 12. For marine traffic, seasonal rules and scheduling will be in effect.

“The County’s current Oceanic Bridge repair project has revealed deterioration in two areas not readily or previously accessible,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Department of Public Works and Engineering.

Two of the bridge’s four main bearings need to be repaired. The bearings are part of the mechanism that supports the bascule and flanking spans on the bridge approaches.

New Jersey Natural Gas takes 10 weeks to disconnect-reconnect rebuilt Sandy homes

New Jersey Natural Gas, the utility that provides natural gas to nearly a half million customers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties as well as parts of Burlington, Middlesex and Morris, is delaying many Jersey Shore residents from moving back into their Sandy damaged and reconstructed homes by up to 10 weeks.

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon said that a constituent contacted him with information that the contractor rebuilding her home said that NJNG takes 8 weeks to disconnect service pre-construction and another 8 weeks to reconnect the gas service after construction has been completed.

O’Scanlon reached out to New Jersey Natural Gas representatives who clarified that the average time frame for a disconnect is approximately 4 weeks, and the average time for a reconnect is 4-6 weeks. Disconnections and re-connections of gas lines are more complicated than for power lines, the utility’s representative said, thus leading to longer lead times.  For this reason homeowners and contractors are encouraged to contact New Jersey Natural Gas early in their construction planning phase.
