Middletown Township Committeeman Steve Massell today announced his endorsement of Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon to succeed Senator Joe Kyrillos as the senior legislator for northern Monmouth County’s 13th legislative district.

Report: Rich not running for re-election as Monmouth County Freeholder

Gary Rich

InsiderNJ.com is reporting that an anonymous Monmouth County source has said that Freeholder Gary Rich will not be running for re-election in November.

“Chairman Shaun Golden sat down with Rich last night to tell him the organization is going in another direction and Rich opted not to fight,” the site reported their source said.

MMM has confirmed that Golden and Rich met yesterday, but it is not clear if Golden is pushing Rich out or if the two term Freeholder is leaving on his own volition. Rich has been giving mixed signals about his intentions; he has told people he is running, but he has not raised any money nor attended any political events recently.   He has left at least two Freeholder meetings early since the first of the year.  Neither Golden or Rich have responded messages seeking confirmation of their meeting’s content and tone.

Arnone Endorses O’Scanlon in LD 13 Senate Race

Asemblyman Declan O’Scanlon, Sheriff Shaun Golden. Freeholder Serena DiMaso, and Freeholder Tom Arnone

Freeholder Tom Arnone has endorsed Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon to replace Senator Joe Kyrillos in the upper house of the legislature next year.

“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Assemblyman O’Scanlon with our shared goal to maintain the high quality of life our residents deserve.” Arnone said. “Serving as the Assembly Republican Budget Officer since 2012, he has consistently made fiscally responsible decisions on behalf of our constituents. Assemblyman O’Scanlon will serve as a tremendous asset and voice for Monmouth County against the special interest groups in Trenton, and I look forward to continuing to work together to ensure our municipalities are being fairly represented. As such, I am proud to endorse Assemblyman O’Scanlon in his bid to replace Senator Kyrillos. He will certainly have big shoes to fill, but I am confident he will serve us well.”

Is Christie setting Guadagno up for failure?

If Governor Chris Christie was still popular in New Jersey, or Washington, the New Jersey press corps would be pushing a narrative that Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno “is no Chris Christie.”

But Christie is less popular in New Jersey than Anthony Weiner is with Hillary Clinton supporters. Thus the narrative is that Guadagno has been Christie’s second in command and has stood behind him (literally and figuratively) for seven years while New Jersey’s economy has remained stagnant, our credit rating downgraded continuously, and traffic was a mess in Fort Lee for a few days in 2013.

Thus, as Guadagno is running to replace Christie next January, she has to show New Jersey voters that she is no Chris Christie while threading a needle to avoid Christie’s famously vindictive wrath. That’s a difficult endeavor.

Assemblywoman Amy Handlin

Assemblywoman Amy Handlin raised $4,075 for her campaign to replace Senator Joe Kyrillos in the State Senate during the quarter that ended December 31, 2016, according to her latest filing with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.  The amount almost doubles what she has raised since her last election in 2015.  Her total raised for the cycle is $8,175.

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon, Handlin’s district mate who is also contending for Kyrillos’s seat in the upper chamber of the legislature, raised $121,075 for his campaign during the same period.

Monmouth Dems Nominate Murphy For Governor

The Monmouth County Democrats endorsed former Goldman Sachs executive Phil Murphy, of Middletown, to be the Party nominee for Governor in the June 6 Democrat Primary at their secret convention in Wall Township this afternoon, according to a facebook post by Fox News Contributor Julie Roginsky.

The endorsement traditionally gives the favored candidate superior ballot positioning within the County in the Primary election.

Murphy has been considered the runaway front runner for the nomination since Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop announced he would not seek the nomination last September.  Fulop endorsed Murphy, as did several Democrat County Chairs and Party Leaders.  Senate President Steve Sweeney announced that he would not be a candidate in early October and backed Murphy.

Guadagno’s running for N.J. governor, and away from Christie

O’Scanlon Raises $121K in two months for LD13 State Senate Race

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Middletown Township Committeeman Steve Massell at Monmouth County’s Reorganization, January 5, 2017

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon announced today that he raised $121,075 in the two months since he declared his candidacy for State Senate in New Jersey’s 13th Legislative District.  O’Scanlon is seeking to replace Senator Joe Kyrillos in the Senate.  Kyrillos announced in late October that he would not seek another term.

“The job of a State Senator is so much more than going to Trenton and voting on bills,” OScanlon said. “The job includes being a leader in the community and the Party.  That means having the resources to support your own campaign, the campaigns of other great candidates and most importantly, civic and charitable organizations in the district.  I am deeply grateful to my friends and supporters who have enabled me to support great candidates and organizations during my eight year career in the Assembly.  I am humbled that they have stepped up so strongly to support my candidacy for Senate.”
