Bob Hugin wins Monmouth GOP endorsement for U.S. Senate

Rich Pezzullo gets the CD-6 endorsement by acclamation

Former Celgene CEO Bob Hugin won the endorsement of the Monmouth County Republican Committee for the GOP U.S. Senate nomination tonight besting Brian Goldberg by a margin of 121-17.

Freeholder Director Tom Arnone nominated Hugin. Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger seconded the nomination.  When Chairman Shaun Golden asked the convention for a nomination for Goldberg, the room was silent.   Hugin stood and said, “I’ll nominate Brian.  He is a competitor and deserves to be heard.  I’ll nominate him if allowed.”  Golden again asked for a nomination from the assembled County Committee members.  State Senator Declan O’ Scanlon offered the nomination and Golden himself provided the second.

“Bob Hugin will represent all New Jerseyans with honor in Washington and I’m proud to support his candidacy,” said Chairman Shaun Golden. “Bob has been a job creator here in New Jersey for decades and I know he’ll continue to fight for New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.”

“I’m humbled by the support from the Monmouth County Republican Committee,” said Bob Hugin. “I look forward to working together in our effort to bring honesty and integrity back to the U.S. Senate on behalf of all New Jerseyans.”

Hugin has previous won the county GOP endorsement from the Warren, Hudson, Burlington, Ocean, Hunterdon, Union, Salem, Gloucester, Cape May, Morris, Sussex, and Camden Republican County Committee.  The Passaic County GOP also awarded Hugin their endorsement tonight.

Former State Senator Jennifer Beck nominated Rich Pezzullo for the 6th Congressional District endorsement.

After accepting the nomination, Pezzullo laid out his strategy to defeat the entrenched far-left Congressman Frank Pallone in brief remarks. “We’re outnumbered in this district by registration, but we are not outnumbered in our patriotism.”

“After 30 years, Frank Pallone has proven again and again that he does not share our vision. He does not believe in America,” Pezzullo continued. “His reign of uselessness is over.”

“The message is the dream: the greatest age of American history is within our grasp. Frank Pallone is standing in our way, and his time is up.”

Will take both money and hard work. If it were my choice, the main message is, from day one: “NJ: we deserve better!”- What often happens with a new candidate, they are all over the page with TMI, trying to address every little problem that they are gonna fix. Messages get blurred, and lost in the weeds: then the voters turn around and re- vote for the familiar name. I fervently hope Mr. Hugin does not make that major mistake!

The fix was in against the legitimate conservative candidate, Mr Goldberg. Mr. Hugin’s strategy appears to be running left to appeal to Democrats and independents. He is Doug Forrester 2.0 and the party loves it because he will put up his own money. If you offer voters the choice between a Republican that is liberal and a Democrat. People go with the Democrat every time. The bottom line is January 3, 1979, that is the last time NJ had an “elected” Republican in the US Senate. Regarding CD6, the Monmouth and Middlesex Republican parties will put up anyone with a pulse against Pallone because you would need a great candidate with around 5 million dollars to even have a chance. Mr. Pezzullo is a veteran and a badly needed conservative voice who will campaign hard but will not get the funding needed to beat Mr. Pallone. The Monmouth County Republican Party leaders better start thinking about how to grow the base, because their core constituency is either dying or moving out of state. The numbers in the last few Freeholder races speak for themselves. If Curley runs as an “I” at the very least you will see a Democrat on the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2019. Party Leadership better realize that one day soon Middletown, Holmdel, Colts Neck, Howell, and Wall may not be enough to win. Then you have the elephant in the room, Christie; his damage to the party will take years to repair unless Murphy completely bombs. Maybe legal pot will make people forget about taxes? Of course, I will vote for the Republican, but the stars are all aligning for a massive beatdown. I wonder why Lt. Gov Kim Guadagno stayed out of the race?
