A 400 lb black bear was shot and killed by the Union Beach Police last night.

At about 10 p.m the UBPD sent out an email alert to residents and posted on facebook that they had located a bear in the area of the 600 block of Edmunds Ave.  The email said the 400 lb bear was in a tree.  Residents were warned to stay indoors and to keep their pets indoors as well.

Several Union Beach residents reported on facebook that they heard up to eight shots fired.

UPDATE:  NJDEP TOLD THE UNION BEACH POLICE: “WE DON’T COME OUT ON WEEKENDS”

Between 1 am and 2 am, the Union Beach PD posted, “It is with sincere regret that we announce the animal had to be put down. Subsequent to assessing the situation with several variables involved, the decision was made to prevent an even more grave situation from occurring. New Jersey State Fish and Game will secure and remove the animal. This is not the ideal outcome for us, however, as we know – human life takes precedent over animal life. Public safety will always be our number one priority. We appreciate your understanding.

MMM called the Union Beach Police at 6:45 am.  The dispatcher could not confirm that the bear was the same animal that had been roaming through Middletown on Friday.  The dispatcher said the department would be releasing more information after 9am.

A Middletown resident reported seeing two bear, and adult and a cub on Oak Hill Road near Route 35 at about the same time the Union Beach PD were pursuing the now deceased bear.

According to a reliable source in Middletown, a bear entered a garage at Add On Pools on Route 35 on Friday afternoon. A startled employee screamed and the bear fled over a fence at the back of that property at the corner of Route 35 and Kings Highway.

So sad but ,people talk about us invading their homes , we pay alot of taxes in jersey and we pay for good schools , safe place to live, and even though like most people say bears can’t hurt you why take that chance, yes should have been tranquilized and relocated but people were away for holiday , and didn’t want to bother , someone mentioned stunn gun don’t you have to get close to the bear to do that , would you? Im sure if they would have mauled a child , pet , friend , relative the comments would be different , there is no right or wrong it s done sorry for bear , but need to move on and hope any more bears around will not hurt anyone to come… ??
