Year in review: August 2015

Dylan Gowan, a 19 year old Highlands man, spent the the night of August 11 and early morning hours of August 12 on a buoy 4 miles off the coast of Sandy Hook after the wave runner he was riding from Brooklyn failed and while the U.S. Coast Guard and the NYPD Marine Unit searched New York Harbor for him via helicopter and boat.

Unable to attract the attention of the search parties, Gowan started to swim toward shore when the sun started to rise and he noticed the tide going in. He was rescued by Coast Guard personnel at  about 6:30 a.m. on the 12th.

Gowan had driven to Brooklyn to help out a friend who had ridden the wave runner from Highlands and ran out of gas.

Fully recovered from his ordeal, Gowan told MMM that he intends to join the military in 2016.

Former Marlboro Mayor Matthew V. Scannapieco  pleaded guilty in Delaware to having an ongoing sexual relationship with an underage relative while he was free pending sentencing on federal corruption and tax evasion charges.  Sentenced in September, the 71 year old Scannapieco is scheduled to be released from James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Symrna, DE in March of 2037.

Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal accused former Monmouth County Clerk M. Claire French of refrigerating the capsules containing the words Democrat and Republican during ballot position drawings during her tenure when Republicans rarely lost the draw, or any elections. Gopal sent Middletown Democrat Linda Baum to this years drawing armed with a space age temperature gun to ensure neither capsule was colder than the other.  The capsules were the same temperature, according to Baum’s uncertified reading.  The Democrats won the draw and ran on column A.

    and “the force” be with us to get column 1 in 2016: with the changing voting demographics in Monmouth, we will need all the help we can get.
